What's On

National Museums Liverpool at 40

It’s not every day Liverpool’s museums throw their own birthday bash. But wander past the columns at World Museum and you’ll find the biggest party happens quietly in the galleries. National Museums Liverpool has been bossing it for 40 years, so now they’re shining a spotlight on all the people, objects and stories that have filled their halls since 1986.

What’s It About?

This new exhibition is a proper deep-dive into the Liverpool museum network – from Egyptian mummies and Roman helmets to the moments Liverpool came together for massive events and one-off finds. There’s something satisfying about discovering the old familiar things in a new light, especially when the collections have seen everything from Scouse school trips to global researchers hunting for rare beetles.

You’ll see highlights that have shaped Liverpool’s identity, from early ship-spotting to the nights crowds queued for a glimpse of treasures from around the world. It’s a celebration of the quirks, triumphs and surprises that only National Museums Liverpool could collect. And if you squint at one of the old flyers or family photos, you might even spot someone you know looking slightly bored on a 2002 school day out.

When Is It On?

You’ve got plenty of time to catch it – the exhibition runs until 28 February 2027.
